Oh my gosh, it worked! I started a blog. and I am listed in Bloglovin. now I have to post stuff.
My latest obsession in raising chickens. When I was in my very early teens, I convinced my mom to let me get some chickens. She let me get 6 bird. when I got them they were little tiny fluffy thing. when they got bigger, it turned out they were all roosters. So we never got any eggs and my dog, Lancer, decided he wanted to "wash" all the birds, so we didn't get any meat either. Now Many years later, I am living on 5 acres in the country in Ohio and I am trying again. this time I was a little smarter. I bought hens that were already laying eggs. my original 8 hens are now down to 4 Rhode Island Reds. They have died off. But that is to be expected. I had them for about a year and a half.since then I have purchased 4 Black Silky/Bantam Mixes and a beautiful white silk rooster. The Black Silkys keep going broody. that means, if you do not know, they stop laying eggs and just sit on the eggs that are there and try and hatch the eggs. I just steal the eggs out from under them. Then I went out 6 months later and bought 10 white silky chicks. As they have grown, I lost 2 to wild animals. I now know I have 3 rooster and 5 hens in that batch. They should start laying eggs soon. I mentioned to a friend I was going to be butchering the extra roosters. You only need one rooster for every 10-15 hens . If you have to many roosters, they tend to wear out the hens and they stop laying eggs due to stress. so I only need one rooster. Anyway, it bugged my friend that I was going to just kill them and eat them. Why else would I raise them if not to feed my family? they want to take 2 of them off my hands and then I would only have 2 wearing out my girls. LOL still deciding....
Today when I went out to gather eggs I decided to just mark the eggs in the nests and let my 2 broody hens do their thing. There we 6 eggs under those two so in about 21 days we will have more baby's running around.
The other animals in my life now and my 3 dogs. Candy, my 16 yr old Pekinese. Jojo, my 14 yr old Pekinese. Buck, my 12 yr old Pug. I had 3 one year old cats, Cherry, Pixel, and Ghost. Ghost was a great mouser! every few days he would bring me another dead animal to show me how he caught it. about 2 weeks ago he disappeared. and since the other 2 cats do Not catch mice we decided to get 2 more kittens. They are about 8 weeks old. I was told their mother was a very good mouser, but she abandoned the kittens at 4 weeks so they were bottle feed the last 3 weeks and did not have the mommy cat to teach them about litter boxes. They are learning.
I also have my Husband, whom at times acts more like a child then my kids ever did. He is NOT mechanically inclined. He can NOT cook. But because he wants to "feel" like the man of the house, he likes me to not work. This is a good thing. it lets me stay home and play in may fields. he also lets (I say that like he has a choice) me buy anything we need.... "Honest honey, I needed a circular saw with a lazier site to cut the one piece of wood down 4 inches to fit on the wall where I wanted to put it. and I really did need a new drill!! Look it has a cool quick release bit!" or "Really Tim, I Had to get a new crock pot, the 3 I had weren't the right size! and of course I needed a Belgium waffle maker because the other waffle maker just made little squares".
Like I said I have a wide variety in of interests. I also have 2 boys. My older one is 20, he is almost ready to move out on his own. he is taking more and more responsibility for things in his life and I am very proud of the Man he has grown into. My other son is 15, he is turning 16 at the end of this month. He makes me smile over many things. we have long discussions about a wide variety of things and I see him growing in to a responsible adult some day also. I find it amusing after of years of trying to get him interested in cooking and now he suddenly wants to learn how to make everything. He is planning on studying cooking and restaurant management in the carrier training center that is part of his High School.
So now you know a little more about me, or about the things around me. You can say this about my life, someday it may slow down to a nice easy pace, but it is never dull.
